Description
What is PrEP?
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily medication taken by people who are HIV negative to reduce their risk of getting HIV.
It means taking antiretroviral medicines (ART) before being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected. It is highly effective when taken consistently.
How Does PrEP Work?
PrEP works by building up HIV-fighting medication in your bloodstream and genital/rectal tissues. If HIV enters your body, the medicine stops the virus from spreading.
PrEP is for people who don’t have HIV but
- have a sex partner with HIV
- have sex with people whose
HIV status is unknown - share injection drug equipment.
