Why Men Wake Up With Morning Erections
Morning erection also called morning wood or nocturnal erection is a part of having a penis and it clearly indicates that there is healthy blood supply to a man’s penis.
In fact, for a man who does not have regular morning erections, it indicates an issue such as erectile dysfunction (ED) or hormonal imbalances like a decrease in testosterone or problems with his nerves/blood supply or an underlying health issue like diabetes, high cholesterol levels or high blood pressure.
What exactly triggers morning erections?
Morning erections are simply as a result of sleep cycles, combined with good blood flow in the body as well as a good testosterone level.
This erections happen during the REM(rapid eye movement) phase and during this phase, your eyes move around rapidly in a range of directions, but don’t send any visual information to your brain. A person can have multiple periods of REM sleep stage so penises can become erect and then flaccid again several times in the course of one night but you may not be aware of them.
Also, testosterone levels tends to be high in the morning and this hormone is responsible for the male sexual function thereby allowing easy erection.
What if you stop getting morning erections?
Males, from children(sometimes) to older adults will get morning erections, young adult males may wake up to a morning erection every morning but as a man gets older, they can expect to get it less often; this change is due to a shift or decrease in testosterone levels.
A man who is in the peak of his sexual maturity which is his late teen years to late 30’s and has few or no episodes of morning erection signifies he has hormonal imbalance or has low quality sleep or erectile dysfunction or an underlying health issue.
Please note:
- Morning erections is not related to sexual thoughts, dreams, or stimulation, It is simply a result of sleep cycles and good blood supply.
- Morning woods can be different from one caused by arousal.
- As a man ages, the frequency of morning erections should decline gradually, not suddenly; a sudden drop in morning erection could be as a result of a health issue.
- Decrease in testosterone level will affect how often a man gets morning erections.
